The Department of Posts has issued an Office Memorandum dated 31 July 2026 directing all Postal Circles and Offices of Exchange to ensure priority handling, processing, and dispatch of Rakhi Mail for both domestic and international destinations ahead of Raksha Bandhan on 28 August 2026. The instructions aim to facilitate timely delivery of Rakhi consignments and improve customer service during the festive season.

Priority Processing of Rakhi Mail
The Department has instructed all Circles to make special arrangements for the booking, handling, and dispatch of Rakhi mail. Postal administrations may introduce special Rakhi packaging envelopes and packs at Post Offices to attract customers and capitalize on the significant demand from the Indian diaspora living abroad.
Daily Monitoring of Mail Disposal
To prevent delays, adequate staff deployment has been directed at Post Offices, Foreign Post Offices (FPOs), and Air Mail Sorting Offices (APSOs). Additionally, every FPO/APSO must submit a daily report to the Office of ADG (IM) from 1 August 2026, indicating the number of Rakhi articles received and dispatched, covering both inbound and outbound mail.
Customs Documentation Made Easier
The memorandum emphasizes guiding customers on proper documentation while booking international Rakhi consignments. Customers should ensure:
- Complete postal address with ZIP/Post Code.
- Accurate customs declaration.
- Clear description and quantity of contents.
- Mention of the applicable HS Code and US HTSUS Code wherever applicable to facilitate faster customs clearance.

Considering the expected increase in festive and e-commerce shipments, all Circles have been instructed to ensure timely processing, secure transmission, and prompt delivery of both outbound and inbound Rakhi consignments. Publicity through banners, posters, standees, local TV channels, and radio jingles has also been encouraged to promote India Post's Rakhi Mail services.
